Making smart decisions about materials and smart use of space has always been the primary objective for Modern-Shed from day one. What we present is a concept that is based on this simple approach, rooted in efficiency and ecologically minded thinking. So being green for us is not an abstract term but rather a natural way of working that carries through from manufacturing to the end use of each structure to the way we operate our corporate office. From an architectural perspective, we understand that almost any new building process is one of destruction to achieve something new; it comes down to how smart and low-impact that process is. We continue looking into the sources of the materials (like the framing and interior finishes) to better understand the sensible choices that are available. All Modern Shed materials are designed and made under one roof. Local manufacturers are utilized to obtain all Modern-Shedís materials (doors, windows, roofing). This streamlined system is the ultimate efficient and ecological solution to prefabricated building. Our office is now ìvirtualî eliminating daily commuting for our employees and has eliminated, virtually, all paper. All documents, invoicing, and communication are done electronically furthering our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.
Standard / Inherent ìGreenî features of Modern-Shed:
Use engineered products such as Hardi-Panel, glue-lam, and OSB that are resource conscience and considered more sustainable than traditional materials.
We offer denim insulation which contains 85% post-industrial recycled fibers.
Our structures are often installed with GreenGrid roof which is a modular roof system of vegetation to reduce energy costs, regulate structure temperature, and help manage rainwater runoff. See greengridroofs.com
Assured 70% Certified materials by FSC ñ Forest Stewardship Council who certifies wood and materials which have been produced by high environmentally conscious standards.
We also offer structures manufactured with SIPs; Sandwich expanded foam between oriented strand boards (OSB) which provide increased thermal protection and improved strength and durability over conventional construction.
3Form resin panels are an option we offer. 3Form takes responsibility for its products over their entire life cycle. Our Reclaim program reuses and recycles materials removed from installations or panels damaged in production. It is a bi-directional process that prevents panels from entering the landfill and extends their useful life.
All scrap wood leftover cuts utilized to heat the shop
Our structures can be disassembled and moved ñ making it flexible for todayís changing housing needs.
We provide an alternative to adding on expensive additions to the house, thus saving the waste of such and effort, eliminating tearing apart and rebuilding, substantially cutting down on contractor travel distance and time back and forth to the site.
We provide a great option for working at home and thus removing the work commute altogether.
We keep families from outgrowing their current home and having to upscale to a bigger one just to meet changing needs.
The sheds are small, efficient spaces which are well insulated and energy conscious, taking very little energy to heat or cool.
We use durable materials like aluminum, galvanized metal, concrete based siding that will be a longer lasting lower maintenance consideration.
Our typical finishes have low VOC content like our exterior paints that are all water based, or interior clear shellac ñ a renewable eco friendly product.
Clerestory windows around the top of the shed provide natural light reducing daytime lighting requirements.
