Modern Shed began with a simple idea: to create beautiful, functional spaces that fit seamlessly into everyday life.
In the early 2000s, founders Ryan and Ahna Smith moved to Seattle after graduating from UCLA with degrees in architecture. Their midcentury modern home had charm but lacked storage. As architects, they saw an opportunity. Ryan designed a modern, prefabricated shed that preserved their yard and landscaping. That first shed quickly inspired an art studio, and soon friends and neighbors encouraged them to turn the concept into a business.
From that spark, Modern Shed was born—pioneering the backyard studio movement and inspiring countless imitators. For more than two decades, we’ve helped thousands of clients transform their homes with flexible spaces: home offices, gyms, craft rooms, gaming spaces, guest suites, junior ADUs, and full accessory dwelling units.
Current CEO, Marc Fuller, has focused on retaining the talented leadership and design team that built Modern Shed into the leader in backyard studios and ADU’s. Over the last couple of years, Modern Shed has expanded with a Midwest fabrication facility in Michigan, new designs, a redesigned website, and a growing sales staff—all to better serve clients across the country.

We can include reasonably accurate cost estimates of the ancillary costs involved with site preparation, foundation, delivery and installation. We have found the competition often leaves out important factors like floors, freight, electrical and sometimes the installation itself. We believe it is utmost importance to compare apples to apples. When working with our Design Professionals you receive detailed pricing for your entire project.
